Keegan possesses the ability of Pain Transferal, which allows him to temporarily reduce or redirect the sensation of pain — whether caused by external injuries or internal nerve reactions. This power can be applied to himself or to others, provided they have functioning pain receptors.

ii. How does that power manifest? (Reaction to danger, by thinking to activate it, it’s passively active, etc.)

His power stems from a deep emotional drive to help and heal, and he has now mastered it enough to switch it on and off at will.

Keegan’s power functions through direct skin-to-skin contact, and through training, he has refined his ability to concentrate its effects in his hands, though he can occasionally channel it through other exposed skin if needed. Upon contact, Keegan can temporarily “draw out” a target’s pain, transferring it into himself and storing it like a battery. If he does not pass that pain on to another recipient, it begins to affect him over time. The relief he provides is not permanent — its effects typically last between 8 and 12 hours, depending on the intensity and scale of his use.

When Keegan applies this transference to himself, he can purge accumulated pain and experience relief of that pain for 16 to 24 hours. However, this does not make him immune to any new pain inflicted during this “purge” phase. He would have to re-transfer pain away from himself.

iii. Why type of drawbacks and/or vulnerabilities does their power have, if any?

Keegan’s ability only mitigates the pain a target is experiencing at that moment, along with any lingering discomfort for roughly 8 to 24 hours. Importantly, this does not mean he has healed the underlying cause — his power cannot close wounds, cure illnesses or diseases, or repair damaged cells or tissues.

Because the pain he extracts remains within his own system, Keegan must eventually transfer it elsewhere or risk feeling its full force within minutes. Through training, he has endured another’s pain for up to 15 minutes, but beyond that, the burden overwhelms him. Guided by the Hippocratic Oath he took as a nurse practitioner prior to stewardship, Keegan refuses to inflict serious harm on others by passing pain into them. This moral boundary prevents him from being an effective crime fighter or deterrent, forcing him to redirect accumulated pain into non-sentient living things, such as trees or other plants, which may not always be available during missions.

His permutation also lacks any visible manifestation on his target (or himself), as it doesn’t heal wounds. On camera, there is no clear sign of pain vanishing outside of observational comments, which often leads AlterEgo users to dismiss his permutation as fraudulent. Some even accuse Keegan of being part of a “Big Hospitals™” scheme designed to push people toward routine checkups.
